Fellow role-players, here are my belated notes for Session 5a.28 of the “Vortexspace opera campaign. Team 1 met on Monday, 6 February 2012, and is using FATE 3e Starblazer Adventures/Mindjammer, Bulldogs, Diaspora, and Limitless Horizons.

In one future, humanity has begun to colonize the Sol system, but ecological degradation and internecine conflicts persist. Open and official First Contact with Galactic societies, themselves at war, threaten Terra’s very survival. Will heroes rise to the challenges?

Two aliens and their human allies encountered xenophobes and megacorporate intrigues on and around Earth. After visiting factionalized Mars and acquiring a starship, they continued their mission of diplomacy and exploration while journeying to Oasis Station….

>>FATE 3e “Vortex” Team 1 (5a), crew of the “Blackbird:”

-“Syzygy” [Brian W.]-Trinoid (trilateral amphibious alien) xenologist with an organic laboratory and a pet cat named “Mr. Sniffles”

-“Tela” [Sara F.]-female Tharian (winged reptilian humanoid alien) escapee from the Encegulans, engineer

-“Chris McKee/Agent Prometheus” [Josh C.]-male Terran cyborg human sniper working for eugenicists at Black Box Security Co.

-“Lt. Kevin Reese” [Bruce K.]-male Terran human, burned-out officer and explorer in the Interplanetary Patrol

-“Scoop Chang” [Rich C.G.]-male Jovian “near-human,” interstellar reporter kidnapped by the Olvar; psi interested in First Contacts

-“Tariq Asrad Saladin” [Beruk A.]-male Terran “near-human,” seeker of enlightenment and investigator met aboard the Ma’ari ship “Cyan Horizon

-“Aughest-vor…” [Jason E.R./absent]-male human from the Lemuria orbital city, onetime dilettante, solar-sail racer, pilot

-“Gombo Shisel” [Rich L./absent]-male Mongolian/Martian human, former horse rancher and wilderness survival expert

-“Dr. Bucket” [Non-Player Character]-United Earth Authority astromech robot assigned to the Blackbird

>>19 to 21 November 2194 A.D./C.E. or 0 Terran Galactic Era:” About 40 light-years from Earth, the human explorers and their alien allies evaded slug-like Encegulans at the Ruby Lantern Resort. The crews of the Blackbird and Dragonfly regrouped at the Regatta Hotel, where Aughest-vor… had reserved a luxurious suite.

No stranger to scandal, Aughest checks the local news for Sector 12 (also known as “the Merging”). The information networks mention an incident at the Ruby Lantern, but they don’t identify any participants. Syzygy observes that it would be bad for business if the brothel’s proprietors publicly admitted a breach of their security.

Chris McKee believes that the slavers would more likely hire bounty hunters for revenge than notify Oasis Station’s overall authorities. With Tela’s help, Scoop Chang uses his Eyebot EVE to hack into the Ruby Lantern’s internal systems. They alter surveillance recordings and spread diversionary rumors about Meorr (lion-like berserkers; created by David F.R-B.).

Tela is afraid of being recaptured by the Encegulans and watches over boyfriend Kedar, who is hung over from the previous night’s carousing at the “Privateer’s Perch” in Sector 10, “the Rusted Link.” Tariq Asrad Saladin recommends that his new companions stick more closely to standard operating procedures for discretion.

Lt. Kevin Reese reminds the group of its missions — to find a missing Kharvamid agent and use a Precursor jump gate to warn the United Earth Authority (U.E.A.) of the approaching Zarkonian Armada. He calls Nycla of Clan Firehoof [Brian/N.P.C.] to ask for help. The fierce Gustrall (raptor-like extraterrestrial) agrees to meet at moonset in the Merging.

Syzygy, Kevin, and Scoop resume the search for the Kharvamid Alliance spy. They ask concierge Mr. Blix about the best places to see and be seen in Sector 11, “the Swift Course.” They are directed to a grand observation deck, where they can watch yachts, interstellar skiffs, and solar-sail racers.

The Trinoid and Terrans see a few Olvar (mammal-like arboreal aliens) wearing archaic human fashions, no doubt inspired by old radio and television transmissions. One has the scarf and goggles of an early aviator. Cyril is interested in seeing the “Morifaiwet” — the original name of the scout ship Blackbird.

Meanwhile, Tariq, Tela, and Chris try to discreetly find out more about the jump gate. Aughest-vor, Kedar, Mr. Sniffles, and Dr. Bucket wait back on the Blackbird. Cestolar (badger-like) trader Ibor vos Talshun [Rich/N.P.C.] takes the squad in his “Metal Vessel” back to the Merging.

Agent Prometheus wants to check with the Port Authority on clues to the gate’s location, ostensibly by asking again about the Trinoid ship the “Nautiloid.” Tela is curious when she sees an Aerdary, a member of a client species of the Gustrall that resembles a chocobo.

At the Regatta Hotel, Syzygy, Lt. Reese, and Scoop meet with an Aquarian (amphibious) diplomat. Plorb [Beruk/N.P.C.] asks for Terran help protecting refugees from Zarkonian attacks on his homeworld. Interplanetary Patrol officer Kevin says that he’ll pass along Plorb’s request to the U.E.A.

Xenologist Syzygy reassures the Aquarian emissary that human inquisitiveness and aggressiveness should help his cause. Journalist Scoop records the conversation but promises to edit it as needed so as not to reveal too much about Earth or Aquaria.

At moonset, Tela, Chris, and Tariq meet with mercenary Nycla and two smugglers. Kerenar [Bruce/N.P.C.] is a Ru’ulok (heavy-gravity reptilian alien) selling virtual reality headsets, and Turvel Dosk [Rich/N.P.C.] is another Cestolar. The Tharian and Terrans don’t trust the traders, but each offers potentially valuable information.

Kerenar says that a relative of his named Serenar is one of the scientists studying the jump gate. The Ru’ulok says that the faster-than-light mode of transport has been reactivated, but no life forms have used it yet.

Agent Prometheus doesn’t trust the burly Ru’ulok, who the Black Box Security Co. agent believes is motivated purely by profit. Investigator Tariq wisely monitors communications and tries to sense the motivations of the aliens.

Short Turvel tells wary Tela that he can provide a ship to get close to the as-yet-undisclosed location of the Precursor device. Nycla apologizes for making the group wait while she privately conferred with her contacts, and she says she knows some of the guards protecting the jump gate from disputing claimants.

Impatient with the shady smugglers, Tariq, Chris, and Tela walk out of the negotiations. They note that they need to confer with the rest of their crew before devising a plan for the jump gate.

Back at the Swift Course, Plorb’s attaché Marvog interrupts the diplomatic conversation. The Cetaran (plesiosaur-like alien; created by Byron V.O.) aide mentions that something called a Zurmiz Krott has attacked Sector 6, “the Grower.”

Plorb surprises Syzygy, Kevin, and Scoop by asking to join them as they head to the scene. He explains that the Zurmiz Krott are believed to be bioengineered scouts for the Zarkonians, but there are few reliable reports on their true nature.

The explorers are horrified to find a cannibalistic riot at the Smiling Goddess Food Court. Syzygy meets fellow Trinoid scientist Selenium [Josh/N.P.C.] and synthesizes anesthetic spores.

Lt. Reese shoulders his way through the mob of assorted species to rescue an Olvar tourist trapped in a tree in the garden level. She is wearing robes from an old Terran adventure serial and carries a plasma blade. Scoop uses Genurgy to armor up and fly in search of the riot’s cause.

Syzygy contacts his crewmates in the Merging, and they hasten to the Grower. Tela notices security forces massing in one docking bay, so she picks another to land in. Chris readies his sniper rifle, and Tariq helps them bluff their way past panicked guards and a Sulishi (furry snail) officer.

Even though they’re able to fend off hungry hordes in the orbital habitat, the newcomers struggle to stay together. Inventive Syzygy and Selenium overcome their differences to incapacitate much of the crowd, as stalwart Agent Prometheus, Tariq, and Plorb protect them with rifle and fists.

Brave Kevin gets tourist Hannah [Sara/N.P.C.] to safety, as winged Tela glides toward curious Scoop. They identify the source of the disturbance as a dark, bulbous mass sitting in the middle of rows of hydroponic crops. It telepathically tempts them toward homicidal madness.

Oasis Station police try to contain the crowd, and Syzygy is distressed at the loss of life. Selenium is more interested in getting a sample from the Zurmiz Krott, which is successful in turning Tela against Kevin! Plorb and Hannah fall back, while Scoop unleashes mental blasts, and Chris looks for targets.

Tariq runs around alien trees as the Zarkonian probe raises itself on three spindly legs. The martial artist radios his companions to aim for the tripod legs rather than the armored body. Scoop is briefly overcome by the Trinoid spores, and Kevin knocks Tela’s EMP gun from her hand and rescues the reporter.

Tariq resists the insanity, while Syzygy treats the wounded. Tela eventually verifies the Zurmiz Krott’s weak points. Chris fires armor-piercing rounds, and Lt. Reese lobs grenades. Scoop psionically reshapes his arms into bladelike weapons, and he joins the others in toppling the hostile device.

As Oasis Station forces finally secure the area, Selenium asks Syzygy for help getting access to the fallen Zurmiz Krott. Tela wants to check on Kedar and the Blackbird, and Agent Prometheus is pleased that his specialized ammunition worked.

Lt. Reese calls Aughest-vor, Dr. Bucket, and Nycla for backup and extraction, while Scoop meticulously records the scene for further analysis. Tariq talks with Plorb and Hannah to see if they’re OK and to ask more about the probe or jump gate….

Back in the Sol system, the grifters on the Appomattox [Team 2] regroup after encountering S.R.E. repossession agents at a house party near Atlanta….

I hope that all of you are doing well during our break from my regular games while Janice and I — and Josh & Sara — settle in after our recent moves!

I hope that the one-shots and miniseries of Josh, Rich, James, and Paul are successful, and I hope to resume my campaigns soon! For example, Josh has offered to run a “Spelljammerswashbuckling space fantasy scenario using FATE 3e Legends of Anglerre while we wait to get back to my Pathfinder/Skype: “the Uncommon Companionstelecom fantasy game.

Brian and Rich have offered to host “VortexTeam 1, which could meet in the next few Mondays. Let us know your availability, and take it easy, -Gene

Moving weekend, 2012

Townhouse apartments in Waltham, Mass.
Windsor Village

Friends, thanks again for your support as Janice and I moved on relatively short notice. After a few weeks in which we hunted for a new apartment, sold or donated various items, and packed, our relocation was tiring but not as difficult as it could have been.

Janice had to work on Friday, 24 February 2012, so I dealt with the professional movers from Gentle Giant, which we had used before. They efficiently loaded our furniture, numerous boxes of books, electronics, and bags of clothing from the duplex in Needham Heights, Massachusetts, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. I definitely couldn’t do it all myself (or even with friends and family) anymore.

I then met the movers at our new townhouse in Waltham, Mass., where they had to contend with more stairs as they worked from about 11:00 to 4:00 p.m. Of course, it was the one day in an unseasonably mild February when it snowed and rained. I met Janice for an early dinner at Stone Hearth Pizza, and we got soaked bringing a few carloads of odds and ends north that evening.

The next day, Janice’s parents, her youngest sister Melinda, and Melinda’s son Joshua came from Upstate New York to help set up our kitchen and clean out the old place. Janice and I sold a few more items, such as our refrigerator and carpets, and we junked our old TV and entertainment center (we finally got a flat-screen and a new stand for it).

Josh was disappointed that he couldn’t play with more of my toys, but most were still packed in my now-crowded study because it also had much of the contents of the basement space we gave up. Janice’s folks also brought barbeque (sloppy Joes) and funny cake.

We got the kitchen, master bedroom, and much of the living/dining room set up. Janice and I later checked the Needham site one last time and returned unused boxes to U-Haul. We also discovered that our unit is in a dead zone for cell phone service because of surrounding buildings. Once our land line is up, that’s not a problem, but it was while we were waiting to meet people!

On a blustery Sunday night, Janice and I met college chum Ben P.S. for dinner at Russell House Tavern in Harvard Square, Cambridge, because he’s in town for a major physics conference.

Janice had a shorter commute to work yesterday, while I waited for a technician from Verizon to reinstall our FiOS (telephone, cable television, and Internet) service. (We’re still trying to get our DVD and VHS players and Wii to work.) Fortunately, I had enough boxes to deal with that I hardly noticed their absence, even during the Oscars. I’m glad that The Artist won the Academy Award for Best Picture, since it’s the one nominee that I had seen.

We still have a lot of unpacking to do, mainly for the two offices. Having more bathrooms is nice, as is a more modern space with a patio. I’ll have to get used to parking again in a crowded lot and to my new routes to work. I hope our higher rent and incidental expenses — I still need to get to a hardware store, buy more bookcases, and find outdoor storage for snow shovels — will be offset by more reliable maintenance.

While we already know some of the restaurants on Moody Street, Janice and I look forward to again exploring the northwestern quadrant of Boston’s suburbs!

“Vortex” Update 5b.27 — Atlanta mansion

Classic car chase
Shelby chase

Fellow role-players, here are my belated notes for Session 5b.27 of the “Vortexspace opera campaign. Team 2 met on Monday, 30 January 2012, and is using FATE 3e Starblazer Adventures/Mindjammer, Bulldogs, Diaspora, and Limitless Horizons.

In one future, humanity has begun to colonize the Sol system, but ecological degradation and internecine conflicts persist. Open and official First Contact with Galactic societies, themselves at war, threaten Terra’s very survival. Will heroes rise to the challenges?

A band of grifters and near-humans retrieved dangerous samples from a battlefield north of Karachi and the Ghanki undersea station. It stole starship engines from a lunar base and an orbital city and was involved in medical disasters in the Venusian colonies. After finding a dimensionally displaced derelict, the team made inquiries into its cargo amid religious turmoil on Titan….

>>FATE 3e “Vortex” Team 2 (5b), crew of the “Appomattox:”

-“Gabriel Adams” [Paul J.]-male North American Terran near-human with telepathy, courier and pilot

-“ARTHERR” [Greg D.C.]-Advanced Resonance Theoretical Heuristic Exploration and Research Robot created by megacorp Vimeco

-“Jasmine” [Sara F.] female Martian Felinoid (Synth, “Uplifted” tiger), former professional pit fighter

-“Mr. Richmond Garrett” [Dave S.C.]-male Southern American Terran human, space snake-oil salesman and social climber

-“Hector Chavez” [Beruk A./absent]-male Latin American Terran human, “burned” operative and communications expert

-“Dr. Dieter Klein” [Rich L./absent]-male European Terran human, semi-retired physician, altruist and thrill seeker

>>”22 to 24 November 2194 A.D./C.E. or 0 Terran Galactic Era:” Upon returning to Earth, the crew of the Appomattox investigated its cargo of Vatican relics, traded castaways to Ru’ulok contacts, and threw a house party that went awry when agents from Systemes de Recuperation Executif Cie (SRE, or Executive Retrieval Systems Inc.) tried to take control of their ship.

Capt. Gabriel Adams stumbles out of the “Gabriel’s Rebellion” (the latest false registry for the space yacht) and rejoins ARTHERR at an estate near Atlanta. The robot tranquilizes the partygoers with gas. Jasmine sends her boyfriend Darsii to carry drunken con artist Richmond Garret back to the ship while she helps search for Hector Chavez in the mansion.

ARTHERR uses the Appomattox‘s scanners and finds four life signs in the manor’s basement. Acrobatic Gabriel leads the way across a trapped room with a tilting floor, aided by ARTHERR as a counterweight. Jasmine smells fellow “Synths” (synthetic or genetically engineered humanoids). The trio tracks Hector to a room behind a heavy door.

Gabriel tries to lure a Martian Ursoid (“Uplifted” bear) guard away from the door, but Marco Sparks ignores most of his jabs with a broken tequila bottle. Onetime wrestler Jasmine jumps Sparks, as Gabriel and ARTHERR run into a nearby garage.

The S.R.E. Ursoid is a worthy match for Jasmine’s tiger strength, so ARTHERR pours some lubricant on the floor. Capt. Adams finds a hovercycle and rams it into the locked door, igniting the oil and crashing into a wall in the next room!

Mighty Jasmine’s choke hold renders Marco unconscious, and she follows Gabriel and ARTHERR through the blazing doorway. They confront an android with whirring blade hands and a near-human menacing Hector.

Courier Gabriel dodges shots from Glenn Alexandrov’s revolver, while ARTHERR distracts fellow droid Gensu 3k. Intimidating Jasmine knocks Glenn down and disarms the S.R.E. cyborg of his sonic shotgun. Gabriel finds a vibroknife to free Hector from his bonds.

Jasmine shoots at Gensu 3k, whom ARTHERR tries to stun and reprogram with old songs. Gabriel stabs at the robot, disabling it. Jasmine and Hector look for a getaway truck, but Capt. Adams steals a rare 1967 Shelby convertible from the garage.

Curious ARTHERR partially reactivates Gensu 3k to take back to the Appomattox. Jasmine picks up Hector, who is upset that S.R.E. got the drop on him while planetside. Upon returning to their ship, the members of “MarSoupAiL” (shell company Mars Soup Aid Lenders Ltd.) find that the two women who fought with Gabriel have escaped!

Darsii explains that he saw Nero Bartholomew, chef and onetime owner of the “Fortune’s Fool,” and reptilian Synth deckhand Averki “Deep Dish” Dyashenko leaving with retrieval agents Jeanie Belveaux and Lisa Panko. Richmond and Gabriel are furious with the deserters, but ARTHERR has brought Gensu 3k, and former spy Hector notes that he wasn’t aboard at the time and that the adventuring party has multiple enemies near Earth.

The Appomattox takes off, with Gabriel considering headings in search of fortune and glory. He and Hector send messages to their contacts for potential gigs. ARTHERR prepares to reprogram the newest crew member, and Darsii reminds Jasmine of her offer to help rescue Synth Liberation Front supporters from the United Ecumenical Movement’s temple on Mars’ moon Phobos….

Meanwhile, about 40 parsecs from the Sol system, the crew of the “Blackbird” lies low after shooting up a shady establishment run by the Encegulans. The explorers and would-be diplomats continue their searches for a missing Kharvamid agent and a way to use a Precursor jump gate, but they encounter a Zurmiz Krott at Oasis Station….

I hope that the various scenarios that other Game Masters run while we’re taking a break from my regular “Vortex” and Pathfinder/Skype: “the Uncommon Companions” games go well! We’ll have to look at alternate locations as Josh & Sara and Janice and I settle in after our moves.

Josh and I will work on an update for the latest Team 1 session. In the meantime, please stay in touch and keep using the Yahoo/eGroups message board, the Google Group, and the Obsidian Portal wiki! -Gene

Relocation reflections

Eastern Massachusetts
Boston's suburbs

Yesterday, Janice and I picked up the keys to our new apartment. The previous evening, more boxes were delivered for our move, and we enjoyed a Valentine’s Day dinner at Acropolis, our favorite Greek restaurant in Needham, Mass.

As we continue packing and trying to sell excess items — with breaks for the annual Westminster dog show — here’s a quick look back at the places I’ve lived.

Childhood in New York City

1968 to 1970: Lower West Side of Manhattan

1970 to 1978: Kingsbridge Heights, the Bronx

I have hazy but fond memories of growing up in New York. The cosmopolitan mix of cultures and cuisines, including immigrants like my parents, made me who I am. I also recall the eventual spread of urban blight as pleasant parks filled with refuse and noisy gangs, especially around the summer of 1977.

Adolescence in Westchester County

1978 to 1986: Dunwoodie, Yonkers; Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains

Although my brother spent more of his formative years here than I did, I recall hours spent biking around, hanging out with other kids on Westerly Street, and discovering my lifelong hobbies with high school friends. Most of the people I knew then were of Irish, Italian, or Central European descent. My “Vanished Lands” fantasy campaign setting and “Vortex” space opera date back to this period.

College in Upstate New York, post-grad year back downstate

1986 to 1990: State University of New York at Binghamton

1990 to 1991: NYPIRG at Queens College-CUNY; Yonkers

Not only did I meet Janice and other friends during this exciting period, but my most rewarding (if least paying) job was teaching urban studies as a community organizer in Flushing. I recall walking through rain, my then-lightning metabolism helping digest dining hall fare, and late-night conversations about life, the universe, and everything.

Grad school, first adult jobs, and marriage around Washington, D.C.

1991 to 1992: Arlington, Virginia; the George Washington University

1992 to 1999: Park Towers in Falls Church, Virginia; BNA

The Clinton years were prosperous. After getting my master’s in international affairs, I spent a few years working my way up from being a file clerk to a copy editor. Our apartment was small, but we were within walking distance of restaurants, Metro rail, and comic book and game shops. Several college friends and my family also moved south.

Boston, Massachusetts

1999 to 2000: Somerville

2000 to 2003: Windsor Gardens, Norwood; CW/IDG

2003 to 2012: Bobsled Drive and Dale Street, Needham Heights

2012: Windsor Village, Waltham; TT

Janice and I first visited Boston during our honeymoon in November 1995. We liked the compact, historic neighborhoods and then-plentiful bookshops, and the information technology boom later provided both of us jobs. While I’ve gone through career and health ups and downs since then, we like living back in the U.S. Northeast, and we hope to continue exploring New England!
