“Vanished Lands: Vistel’s Expedition,” Session 39.49 — Shopping and plotting in Hesolin

Fellow role-players, here are my notes for “Vanished Lands” Session 39.49, which Rich C.G. hosted in Waltham, Mass., on Wednesday, 8 October 2014:

In one ancient world, there was a region where strange majicks and demihuman races thrived. The “Vanished Lands” were blessed by the gods and cursed by prophecy. Travelers became adventurers, and adventurers strove to be heroes in the face of many perils and wonders. One such band began as circus performers, became defenders of the kingdom of Saganim, and voyaged aboard the Zephyr….

Vistel’s Expedition,” crew of the Zephyr, Player Character Party 39 in Gene D.’s “Vanished Lands” campaign, using the D20 Basic Fantasy Role-Playing GameDungeon Crawl Classics, Pathfinder, and FATE 3e Legends of Anglerre, as of autumn 2014:

  • Giacomo ‘the Mysterious’ Du Vane [Beruk A.]-male Hifalendorin human Mage (Gypsy Wizard) afflicted by a cursed tattoo; with homunculus familiar Gerald; NGc, Lvl. 10
  • Scully Strongbow [Sara F.]-female albino Flind (Gnoll) Ranger, archer, knife thrower, and sailor, with owl “Owlicious”; NGl, Lvl. 10
  • Corwin Windsong [Bruce K.]-male Half-Elf Bard, wandering noble, warrior, and mandolin player; CNg, Lvl. 10
  • Elsa Fairbottom [Rich C.G.]-female Hill Dwarf Druid outcast, cook/brewer, and animal handler with banuq (winged cat) Penryn; NGc, Lvl. 10
  • Rhys Davies [Drew S.]-male Tinker Gnome (Minoi) clockwork gadgeteer and impetuous Rogue; TNcg, Lvl. 10

(See previous notes for “Hamfast” and “Brendan” [Brian W.], “Tempestade” [Josh C.], “Radius” [Jason E.R.], “Sir Torrel” [Alex W.], and “Brogar” [Brian S.].)

“12 to 14 April 1227 B.C.E.:” In the Saganim village of Sanry, “Vistel’s Expedition”worked with its new crew and met with Capt. Scarlet of the Sea Elven schoonerFoamrunner. The Zephyr then went to Hesolin, capital of the (proto-Western European) human kingdom of Hifalendor.

Giacomo and Rhys visited a whirlygig shop and the temple of Otih, while Corwin and Elsa checked in at the Saganim embassy. Scully and her boyfriend, Wolfen Paladin “Capt. Niac” [Mike F./Non-Player Character], go ashore to practice their archery and recruit additional sailors.

Corwin plans to buy or trade weapons and armor at the Istari Bazaar, while Elsa acquires a Bag of Holding, Heward’s Handy Haversack, a ring of Protection (+ 2), a Rope of Climbing, a Wand of Silence, and magical studded leather armor (+2). She looks forward to reuniting with Vistel’s Circus.

With help from fellow Tinker Gnome Otis… and Hill Dwarf metalsmith Werner Dogspittle, Rhys successfully attaches clockwork dragon wings to the Zephyr, one key step in making the unusual vessel airworthy.

Giacomo is escorted by Paladins of Otih and Urda to the local Magisterium (magic school), where he conducts research on ridding himself of his cursed tattoo of the “Mad Mage” Ezra. The holy warriors also prepare an exorcism ritual for the Hifalendorin Wizard, who plans to consult Zarendo (East African) human herbalist “Tondra” [Rob A.S./N.P.C.].

Each evening, the adventurers gather for dinner at their rented villa near the “Golden Horn” hotel and restaurant. They are pleasantly surprised when Melchior [guest Byron V.O.] briefly rejoins them. He uses Mage Hand to shutter the windows and extinguish most lamps.

The Saganim (proto-Celtic) human Cleric of Ulandt, goddess of the night, reports on his investigations in the barbaric port of Gisar. Corwin’s half-brother PrinceDaven and Sean Sable (whose family is suspected of necromancy) have been recruiting mercenaries.

In addition, Lord Dalek, the Tiefling (demon-touched) Sorcerer who once framed Corwin for murder, may be working with the vampires who rule Gisar, says Melchior. Corwin wants to pursue Dalek, but Melchior points out that it will take him several weeks to set up a safehouse in the city, where former teammate Hamfast remains.

The former “Seeker of Lore” also warns that relying too heavily on Teleport is a bad idea as long as the Pit Fiend on Salhonif Island is looking for the group. The group had infiltrated a Temple of Elemental Evil and freed an Efreeti from her bondage to Schm*ckF*ck.

Melchior detects that someone has scryed upon Prince Corwin and Rhys, who has worked most closely on the time-displaced steamboat. Elsa adds anti-scrying measures to her list of potential enchantments for the Zephyr, such as protections against fire, rust and noise.

The next day, Scully and Elsa lead the way to the Grove of Mekkil outside Hesolin’s walls. They find a dimunitive Forest Gnome Druid singing to a sleepy badger. Gaffy Barkeater tells the Ranger and Druid about where to find exotic animals such as pegasi and griffons.

Elsa asks about recent strife between centaurs and Hifalendorin humans on the northern Plains of Sathendo. Gaffy says that a centaur named Zenos may know more and that he can often be found at the “Quiet Deer” tavern.

In Hesolin’s theater district, Corwin and Melchior meet Yvonne Valetta, a priestess of Brijitt, goddess of fire and poetry. She recognizes the Half-Elf’s reference to Maeve Gallagher, a Cleric at the Bardic College in Thadenis, capital of the kingdom of Saganim. Corwin gives her a generous donation of 250 crowns (gold pieces).

Yvonne recounts the fairy tale of Vappu Lahja, a woman woed about a century ago by three lords. She was proud and rejected them and was forced to live out her days alone as the lords fought among themselves, bringing much death to the land [see “Uncommon Companions” notes].

Melchior and Rhys note the similarities between the mysterious woman said to be stirring up conflict between the centaurs and Hifalendorin peasants and “Capt. Jack Kildare” [Randy K.M./N.P.C.], the Saganim pirate who has somehow “hacked” his curse to become leader of the dreaded Ghost Fleet.

In addition, Yvonne mentions “Westly the Wondrous” [Alex J./N.P.C.], a Saganim Bard (and former “Dragonslayer”) in residence at the “Bright Battlement” tavern. Elsa plans to visit the Library of Memir to see if she can uncover more information.

Sometime later, “Vistel’s Expedition” and Melchior go to the palace for a royal audience, thanks to Saganim ambassador Sir Culwych. They admire its high towers, thick stone walls, and well-armored guards. Magical scans sweep over the visitors as they pass by iron-bound gates, parade grounds, and colorful gardens.

Palace in Hesolin

Elsa brings her banuq (winged cat) Penryn, and Rhys dismounts from Vasco, his clockwork butler. Despite being an agent of her majesty’s (Queen Margaret of Saganim) secret service, Melchior introduces himself without an alias.

Heralds announce the heroes as they enter a great hall with massive pillars with inscriptions in multiple languages, a vaulted ceiling, and a red and white checkerboard marble floor. They briefly wait in a receiving line before bowing before the throne. Counselors sit on curved benches nearby.

Prince Corwin introduces himself, and King Akkon XII sends greetings to his “brother king,” Edmund II of Saganim (and Corwin’s father). Hill Dwarf Elsa asks for support for her long-range communications network, and Queen Belinda offers a room in the palace.

However, Adm. Clothard Leontis is skeptical about proposals for widening the naval alliance between Hifalendor and Saganim against the Ghost Fleet to include the Ebir Sheikdom, the Kelp Kingdom, and the Principality of Silado (Tong Sheng).

Elsa and Corwin assure King Akkon that they have the approval of King Edmund and hope to visit more capitals. Adm. Leontis notes that existing allied forces are outnumbered by Undead pirates by about 10 to 1, but he grudgingly grants permission to inspect the naval base at the Gargoyle Headlands, about two days’ sail east of Hesolin.

Flind Scully and Gnome Rhys ask about the evil cult of Krakas, lord of the maelstrom, and additional defenses for the Zephyr. The admiral recommends checking with Hesolin’s harbormaster and the temple of Addoh, lord of the sea.

As a gesture of goodwill, the onetime circus performers offer to investigate the centaur attacks on northern farms. Lord Taneli Ellarthen, a Quelithan (High Elf) court mage, observes that Hifalendor would prefer to avoid bloodshed among its citizens and neighboring fey folk such as satyrs and centaurs.

King Akkon notes that his son, Prince Decius, was held hostage in the frontier until he was rescued by the King’s Cavaliers [see “Faith-Based Initiative” notes]. The petitioners notice an athletic young woman, later identified as Princess Priscilla, and Corwin and Melchior (who is married) can’t help but flirt with her.

Gen. Naresh du Goray says that troops in the city of Nadwi stand ready to help, but the adventuring party may be able to deal with threats that he cannot. The king approves of the party’s missions on behalf of Hifalendor.

The happy wanderers return to the “Golden Horn” and begin plotting a course to the Gargoyle Headlands, Nadwi, Falit, and more ports….

While we missed Beruk and Josh, it was good to see everyone, plus Thomas & Kai-Yin, for Byron’s latest visit to the Boston area! I hope that those of you with colds recover soon. Also, remember to update your character records on Obsidian Portal and let me know of any changes regarding equipment or spells.

I look forward to Drew’s “Cumberland County” Southern fantasy one-shot (using Roll for Shoes) tomorrow and continuing Rich’s “Tunnel Vision” modern supernatural miniseries! My “Vanished Lands: A New Dawntelecom game will continue tonight.

“Vanished Lands: A New Dawn” Session 40.33 — Nezumi, Naga, Kitsune, or “You only hurt the ones you love”

Fellow role-players, here are my notes for “Vanished Lands” Session 40.33, which was held on Sunday, 5 October 2014:

Long ago in a distant land, spirits and men directly traded bamboo, silk, and steel. Wars to the west, twisted monsters, and power-hungry sorcerers threatened the eastern kingdoms, so the call went out for new heroes of honor and tact….

Player Character Party 40 in Gene D.’s Vanished Lands: A New Dawn” Asian-style telecom campaign, using the D20 Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st Ed./D&D3.0 Oriental Adventures, Pathfinder, and FATE 3eLegends of Anglerre, plus house rulesSkype, and an online dice roller, as of autumn 2014:

  • Moon Jung-Mo [Dexter V.H.]-male Nannuattan Ninja (Msamaki; eastern Dark Elf Assassin) who has left the Shadow’s Claw clan and is posing as a River Spirit Folk (eastern Grey Elf) merchant; with a young wyvern; LNg, Lvl. 8
  • Souji Nobuto ‘Sonny’ Yoshimitsu [Beruk A.]-male Shengtese Tian Kensai (eastern human weapon master) from a dishonored house in the Lion Clan, specializing in chain weapons; with talking horse Yip; LNg, Lvl. 8
  • Ember Talon [Sara F.]-female Crane Hengeyokai Wu (shapeshifting Druid), actually a young gold dragon banished from the Celestial Court; NGl, Lvl. 8
  • Soske’ Tiatoshe [Geoff C.]-male Shengtese Tian Shukenja (eastern human Cleric), priest and animist from the Phoenix Clan, prophesied to do great things but plagued by family and ancestor spirits; LNg, Lvl. 8
  • Saigo Kasugi [Bruce K.]-male Bamboo Spirit Folk Samurai (eastern Sylvan Elf Cavalier) discreetly serving his daimyo; LNg, Lvl. 8
  • Tokoro Gawa [Drew S.]-male carp Hengeyokai Hulinyuan (amphibious shapeshifting Ranger) seeking to protect streams; with otter companion; CGn, Lvl. 8

“2 to 7 June 1227 B.C.E.:” The adventuring party’s search for children kidnapped from the Shengtese village of Yao Shung led it to a dark Druid’s grove. They encountered monkey goblins, an Oni, and Tengu. Ye-sing Kien, the evil Wu, summoned a fiendish Decapus before both were slain by arrows and spells.

The team redistributes treasure and brings the three children back to their grateful parents in Yao Shung. Jung-Mo recommends more cautious tactics for future fights.

Sonny wonders how Desc Soo-Ann, or “Desan,” the courier who stirred up trouble between the human farmers and guardians of nature, found the group so easily. Toshi finishes enchanting a cage cloaked in illusions for Jung-Mo’s wyvern hatchling.

Ember attends to the steeds, while Soske’ heals the wounded. Saigo urges his companions to press on toward Bazran Hai, the distant capital of the Zedu kingdom. Tokoro checks on provisions, and the diplomatic escorts head northwest.

Hulinyuan Tokoro leads the way on his stag along the Chung Hsien Stream, and Wu Ember flies ahead in crane form. Kensai Sonny and Samurai Saigo follow on horseback.

Ninja Jung-Mo drives the carriage with Gokuri emissary Lady Yun Aei-Yong and her Draconian bodyguard Oh Kum Ja. Shukenja Soske’ and Wu-Jen Toshi (on his tiger Amaya) bring up the rear. The weather turns cool and damp as the caravan crosses the northeastern Plains of Sathendo.

That night, Saigo sets watches. Soske’ and Tokoro take the first one, followed by Jung-Mo and Saigo. Toshi studies his spellbooks while Sonny and Ember sit the third watch. They see two ox carts heading south on the trail, but they do not disturb them.

The next morning, the wanderers agree to ride around the Shan Sao hamlet of Tung Erchuan, despite Toshi’s curiosity. Sonny folds paper to create origami gifts for Lady Yun. Jung-Mo and Ember covertly check on the as-yet-unnamed wyvern, whom they are hiding from the Nannuattan diplomat.

Tokoro sees a cloud of dust ahead and hears the ring of metal and shouting in Bamoric, the language of the humanoids of the Gokuri Empire in the Bamor Mountains. Ember scouts overhead, and Saigo asks the others to wait while he sneaks ahead. Jung-Mo slips away to guard the team’s flanks.

Ember, Tokoro, and Saigo see about a dozen Nezumi (rat folk) fighting one another. They quietly back off and give the skirmish a wide berth, since Saigo argues that getting involved in internecine strife is not their mission.

The group sets a brief campfire that night, and carp Hengeyokai Tokoro politely declines an offer to partake in any fish for dinner. Bamboo Spirit Folk Saigo is eager to be rid of the duplicitous Lady Yun.

Shengtese (East Asian) human Soske’ is surprised not to have encountered any misshapen monsters or Undead in a few days. Toshi sends his tiger out to hunt, and Nannuattan (eastern Dark Elf) Jung-Mo quietly lets his wyvern stretch its wings.

Shengtese Sonny and Hengeyokai Ember spot a herd of Saiga antelope during their watch but don’t disturb their sleeping companions. The next morning, the group approaches the southern edge of the Therud Forest.

Friendly Soske’ waves at a woodsman with an axe and a small cabin, but the caravan doesn’t stop to chat. The sun breaks through the clouds, and the wanderers warm and dry their clothing.

The next evening, Toshi and company follow the sounds of someone singing and sees a woman in the woods. Jung-Mo and Soske’ hang back to protect the camp. Padma Suravida appears to be a Bamboo Spirit Folk (eastern Sylvan Elf) similar to Saigo.

She warns Toshi to beware of Inohara Tomo, a “stealer of breath in sleep” sometimes disguised as a woodcutter. Sonny notices that the woman then focuses her attention on Saigo, who is the highest-ranking visitor present.

The Samurai resists Suravida’s attempt to probe his mind and demands that she show her true form. She agrees, on the condition that the party not attack her on sight. The Mahotsukai transforms into a snake-bodied Naga.

Snake-bodied sorceress
Naga

Sonny isn’t thrilled when Toshi asks if she knows Ye-sing Kien, the Druid they recently defeated. The Sorceress recognizes the name but says she doesn’t know him personally. Saigo honors his word and keeps his swords sheathed.

Ember, who is actually a young gold dragon trapped in demihuman form, is sympathetic to her fellow reptile. Cautious Tokoro remains silent as the snake woman bows and slithers away. Jung-Mo follows Suravida at a distance for a short time to make sure she leaves the area.

The next day, Tokoro notices that someone is keeping up with the party. Two Bamboo Spirit Folk scouts stumble out and introduce themselves. Suwa Taku is Bushi captain of the local Zedu militia, and Yamashina Miwako is a Hulinyuan (eastern Elf Ranger).

They recognize Saigo and invite him and his friends to join them for lunch in their camp. Sonny and Soske’ stay with the carriage to play cards with Lady Yun, and Jung-Mo watches outside.

Suwa tells Saigo and Toshi that they can expect to find armies of Gokuri and Zedu in a fragile truce on the way to Bazran Hai. He also passes along a rumor that Gen. Shinso Saigo, the Samurai’s grandfather, is being held captive by reptile folk in or near the capital.

Yamashina is interested in Ember and Tokoro’s tales of their travels, including eating the head-shaped fruit of the Jinmenju. She also mentions that a courier meeting Desan’s description recently passed through.

Jung-Mo spots a fox with an unusually fluffy tail. The Rogue writes a short note, attaches it to an arrow, and fires it near the creature. The Kitsune shifts to humanoid form, and Jung-Mo notices that Inohara Tomo refers to “we” when he replies to questions.

Fox-faced humanoid

The vulpine fey whistles, and six Nezumi appear, as do four more Kitsune. Soske’ notices the odds shifting outside the carriage, and he and Sonny excuse themselves to go help Jung-Mo.

Ratling bandit
Nezumi

Wily Jung-Mo throws a poison grenade, causing two of the ratlings and two of the fox folk to retch. Three of the Kitsune climb into trees, and four of the Nezumi draw weapons and advance.

Sonny suspects that the duplicate Kitsune are an illusion, but he is unable todisbelieve them. Soske’ casts Ancestral Weapon to call upon ever-cranky spirits, who grant the pious priest an Ice Bow.

In the Bamboo Spirit Folk camp, Tokoro notices that the woods have grown quiet — too quiet, so he heads back to the carriage. Ember Wild Shapes into eagle form, and Toshi shifts into a black baza (small bird). The scouts tell Saigo as he runs off that they will be nearby if needed.

Jung-Mo uses his robe of Alter Self to appear like another Kitsune, but Ember mistakenly attacks him! Jung-Mo returns to Spirit Folk guise and forgives the eagle, trusting that it is his beloved and not an actual foe.

Tomo casts Faerie Fire on Jung-Mo, Toshi, Saigo, Tokoro, and Amaya as the other Kitsune maneuver among the tall trees. The snarling Nezumi swing at the would-be heroes but miss, as does Sonny’s first Whirlwind Attack.

Soske’ is more successful with his icy arrows, and Jung-Mo falls back to defend Lady Yun’s carriage. Ember flies to the Kitsune in the branches and repeatedly rakes them with her talons. Tokoro shoots Nezumi and switches to Tanglefoot arrows, slowing two Kitsune.

Toshi transforms back to Halfling form and kills the injured humanoid with Magic Missiles. Saigo draws his bow and fires at the felonious foxes in the trees. Feline Amaya pounces on one hapless Nezumi.

The arboreal Kitsune Polymorph into snakes and shakily try to escape. Sonny slays two Nezumi with a successful Whirlwind Attack, and Soske’ drops the last of the rodents. Jung-Mo looses arrows to defend eagle Ember as she continues diving.

Tokoro has mercy on one Kitsune, but clever Toshi casts Arc Lightning at two on the ground. Stern Saigo strikes again, and Amaya kills another Kitsune before climbing a tree. Swift Sonny drops his chains for a double attack on a snake.

Soske’s next volley misses, but Toshi’s Lightning Bolt and Amaya’s claws destroy the last two. They search the fallen and find the following:

  • Bow, Merciful (2d6 nonlethal damage) — Tokoro
  • Potion of Water Breathing — Jung-Mo or Ember?
  • Ring of 2 Wishes — Saigo
  • Ring of Climbing (+ 5 to Athletics) — Tokoro
  • Rod of Flailing (+ 3, sizing) — Sonny
  • Scroll of Meld Into Stone — Jung-Mo or Ember?
  • Vest of Sonic Resistance (absorbs 10 points of sonic damage) — Toshi

In addition, Soske’ takes Tokoro’s enchanted studded leather armor (+2) because the Ranger recently acquired armor of Resolve. Among the items the group plans to sell or trade in Bazran Hai are Sonny’s (+2) kau sin ke, (+2) dagger, and axe (+1, +2 vs. Giants), as well as Saigo’s (+3) great sword.

Toshi reminds his companions that he can also create or enhance magic items, given the proper components and time. The team returns to the trail northward….

Good luck to your team as it continues its journey to Bazran Hai! Dexter and Sara, we should touch base to make sure your characters are up to date. I also look forward to Rich’s “Tunnel Vision” session tonight and Byron’s visit to the Boston area later this week….

“Vanished Lands: Vistel’s Expedition” Session 39.48 — From Sanry to Hesolin

Fellow role-players, here are my notes for “Vanished Lands” Session 39.48, which Drew S. hosted in Needham, Mass., on Monday, 29 September 2014:

  • Rhys Davies [Drew S.]-male Tinker Gnome (Minoi) clockwork gadgeteer and impetuous Rogue; TNcg, Lvl. 10

(See previous notes for “Hamfast” and “Brendan” [Brian W.], “Tempestade” [Josh C.], “Radius” [Jason E.R.], “Sir Torrel” [Alex W.], and “Brogar” [Brian S.].)

“5 to 11 April 1227 B.C.E.:” The Zephyr made its shakedown cruise along the Saganim coast and easily defeated the pirate galley Cruel Cutlass. “Vistel’s Expedition” worked with its new crew and planned for future destinations.

At the village of Sanry, “Capt. Niac” [Mike F./Non-Player Character] gives part of the crew shore leave. The Wolfen Paladin stays aboard the ship with Scully, partly to avoid any xenophobic Saganim (proto-Celtic) humans.

Giacomo and girlfriend Maggie Oakleaf find a used book shop run by Liam Mulroney. The Wizard recognizes a tome on chromatic (evil) dragons once owned by his mentor, Teradin Calzor.

Corwin and apprentice Doyle Tunney go to the “Steed’s Stream” pub, where the Bards perform for a swooning audience. Elsa takes her banuq (winged cat) Penryn, fellow cook Audrey Driscoll, and recently wounded acolyte Kaitlin Ellis out for drinks.

Diminutive Rhys sits under a table with the “Nook & Cranny Council” — Giacomo’s homunculus familiar Gerald, clockwork butler Vasco, and cabin boy Tiernan Saunders (an exception to the height limit). They agree to acquire hammocks for the engine room in the Zephyr.

Giacomo and Maggie return to the ship to continue setting up its chart room. Corwin gets a room for the night from Mona Collins, the proprietor of the “Steed’s Stream,” to entertain two young ladies.

Elsa learns from Eileen O’Shea, the priestess at a chapel of Brijitt, goddess of fire and poetry, that the other large ship in port is the Northern Shark, likely a pirate galley and best avoided. The Clerics trade tales about Prince Berek.

Rhys offers Gerald food and drink, even though the winged familiar isn’t designed for digestion. The mischievous Tinker Gnome also invites Penryn to join the “Nook & Cranny Council.”

The next morning, Corwin pays his respects at the chapel and offers 50 crowns (gold pieces) for favorable gossip. Eileen describes the history of “Capt. Jack Kildare” [Randy K.M./N.P.C.] and the Undead pirates. Back at the inn, the Half-Elf talks with a mysterious armored warrior known as “the Traveler.”

“Dynar Al-Vyn Natar” [James A.W./N.P.C.] is a Myrmidon who has taken up the defense of Sanry as a personal mission. He recently fought Swamplight Lynxes and dealt with local headman Boss Desmond.

Rhys spots a swift vessel with outrigger pontoons and lanteen (triangular) sails approaching. The engineer notifies Niac and goes to the “Steed’s Stream” to announce the arrival of the Foamrunner, which Elsa had Messaged to meet.

The Hill Dwarf Druid greets Capt. Scarlet and her crew. The Thalassaquendi (western Sea Elf) tells her former passengers about pursuers sent by the Pit Fiend in the Zarendo Islands.

Hifalendorin (proto-Western European) human Giacomo notes that an angry devil is the lesser evil compared with the dreaded Ghost Fleet. Capt. Scarlet confirms that the cult of Krakas, lord of the maelstrom, and the Scourge are connected.

Elsa describes her plans for a long-range magical communications network and asks if the Kelp Kingdom would be willing to join that and a naval alliance. Rhys provides a jeweled dagger he stole from a manor in Drunstimlos. The Thalassaquendi say they expect reparations for a robbery from the Coral Temple by Saganim pirates about 15 years ago.

Capt. Scarlet offers to go to the undersea city of Oceanis on behalf of “Vistel’s Expedition.” Rhys’ interest is piqued by the possibility of submarine travel. In return, a Limited Wish spell grants the Foamrunner temporary invisibility against fiends, giving it lead time against Schm*ckF*ck’s minions.

After the Sea Elves depart, Giacomo agrees to get his cursed tattoo of the “Mad Mage” Ezra removed in the city of Hesolin. Corwin puts on another fine show at the “Steed’s Stream,” and Elsa teases him with a framed handbill from his time as a carnival performer.

Rhys works with carpenter Cyric Ahearn, sailmaker Emmet Banning, tinkerer Evelyn Morgwyl, and blacksmith Ronan Teague to hone their operations aboard the Zephyr. Capt. Niac gives the order to board and head northeast on the Sea of Nagendwa.

Wizard Giacomo works on a spotlight using Zorya Polunochnaya’s Moon (costing 1,500 g.p.) for Ranger Scully and gadgeteer Rhys. First mate Corwin moves about the ship to learn about each sailor’s duties.

Priestess Elsa reminds her companions that in addition to her communications network and an alliance against the Ghost Fleet, they should offer to help the kingdom of Hifalendor deal with a Centaur insurrection on the northern Plains of Sathendo provoked by a woman named Vappu Lahja.

About a day’s sail from the Hifalendorin capital, the crew of the Zephyr spots three groups of naval vessels on the horizon. Capt. Louise Jeffords, commander of the H.M.S. Sea Wolf, a well-armed cruiser, hails Capt. Niac. She signals for the refitted steamboat to follow her into port.

The adventuring party is impressed to see Hesolin’s highwhite walls as they pull into the busy harbor. The naval escort departs, and Niac allows everyone to go ashore.

Giacomo, who has been reluctant to return home, says that he needs to visit the local Magisterium [magic school] and “Tondra” [Rob A.S./N.P.C.] regarding his tattoo removal. Niac suggests also checking with the temple of Otih.

Corwin plans to check in with the Saganim embassy and the temple of Brijitt. He has sent “Melchior” [Byron V.O.] ahead to the barbaric port of Gisar to track down the murderous Tiefling mage Lord Dalek and his half-brother Prince Daven.

Elsa recommends sticking together, especially for any royal audience. She also expresses interest in shopping and meeting up with old friends in Vistel’s Circus. Rhys hopes to find coal for the ship, as well as fellow craftsmen.

The team first walks to the center of town, passing by dens of vice around the Arena of Ariyas, odiferous smithies, and the theater district. Giacomo leads the way along the wide, cobbled streets, and Corwin is curious about who’s performing in the noisy taverns.

Elsa observes various columned temples and even Pegasi flying from the palace towers. Rhys begins asking around about Hesolin’s guilds. They climb a hill to the “Golden Horn” hotel and restaurant in quiet Castle Court.

Charismatic Corwin inquires about lodgings with Averain, who suggests renting a villa rather than a room or suite. For just 50 crowns, the group gets a townhouse for a fortnight. Despite wary Giacomo’s objections, outgoing Elsa hires local youth Justine as a guide.

Giacomo, Rhys, Maggie, and Evelyn go to the Gnomish quarter, between Embassy Row and the Magisterium. Rhys gleefully compares notes with the owner of “Otis’ Whirlygigs” on wind power, screw propellers, and clockwork. Giacomo and “Dread” Maggie are bored, but Half-Elf Eveyln tries to follow their technical conversation.

Meanwhile, Corwin and Elsa cross the street to the Saganim embassy. The prince demands to meet the ambassador for his homeland, saying it’s a matter of national security. However, officious Miss O’Leary [Drew/N.P.C.] requires visitors to fill out numerous forms first.

Elsa tries to be pleasant with the bureaucrat, who eventually brings them to Sir Culwych [Beruk/N.P.C.]. Prince Corwin and Elsa explain how they wish to strengthen the alliance between Saganim and Hifalendor, and the skeptical emissary eventually comes around. He agrees to request a royal audience within the next few days.

Giacomo and friends then go to the temple of Otih. They meet Sir Louis [Rich/N.P.C.], a Paladin of the god of sun and justice, and Sir Remy Hotspur [Bruce/N.P.C.], a member of the King’s Cavaliers. They ignore Rhys, Maggie, and Evelyn when a routine scan detects the presence of strong evil on Giacomo.

The unlucky Wizard explains his plight and how, when Hesolin’s Magisterium was sacked by the Ghost Fleet a few years ago, Teradin Calzor imparted the tattoo on his back. The knights manacle and shackle Giacomo, whose true name is “Gerald” (hence the name of his familiar, in an attempt to misdirect enemy spellcasters).

Sir Remy is less sympathetic than Sir Louis, accusing the Hifalendorin of being a traitor, like other arcanists who have gone missing since the attack. Rhys vouches for Giacomo and agrees to submit to Otih’s judgment.

The Rogue swears on Sir Louis’ shining lance, and all his misdemeanors flash before everyone’s eyes. Sir Remy is still reluctant to release the mage, but Sir Louis calls for Sir Akkon Wotarif, a Paladin from the cathedral of Urda, lord of the sky.

Sir Akkon arrives and agrees to help escort Giacomo as he moves about Hesolin. He says that a ritual to exorcise the Mad Mage will take a few days, but it’s necessary before the holy warriors would allow “Vistel’s Expedition” to meet the king.

The wanderers reconvene at the “Golden Horn,” and Corwin and Elsa are surprised to find Giacomo with an escort of knights. They rest before resuming their exploration of the walled city….

We missed you, Sara, and I hope that everybody enjoyed our latest “Vanished Lands” sessions. Remember to review your character records and wish lists for gear and magic while you’re in Hesolin.

I also look forward to continuing Rich’s “Tunnel Vision” (using Hunterthe Reckoning) next Monday. Remember to let me know your availability for Byron’s next visit on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

“Vanished Lands: A New Dawn” Session 40.32 — Gnarly grove and dispelling the Decapus

Fellow role-players, here are my notes for “Vanished Lands” Session 40.32, which was held on Sunday, 28 September 2014:

Long ago in a distant land, spirits and men directly traded bamboo, silk, and steel. Wars to the west, twisted monsters, and power-hungry sorcerers threatened the eastern kingdoms, so the call went out for new heroes of honor and tact….

Player Character Party 40 in Gene D.’s Vanished Lands: A New Dawn” Asian-style telecom campaign, using the D20 Basic Fantasy Role-Playing Game, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st Ed./D&D3.0 Oriental Adventures, Pathfinder, and FATE 3e Legends of Anglerre, plus house rulesSkype, and an online dice roller, as of autumn 2014:

  • Moon Jung-Mo [Dexter V.H.]-male Nannuattan Ninja (Msamaki; eastern Dark Elf Assassin) who has left the Shadow’s Claw clan and is posing as a River Spirit Folk (eastern Grey Elf) merchant; with a young wyvern; LNg, Lvl. 8
  • Souji Nobuto ‘Sonny’ Yoshimitsu [Beruk A.]-male Shengtese Tian Kensai (eastern human weapon master) from a dishonored house in the Lion Clan, specializing in chain weapons; with talking horse Yip; LNg, Lvl. 8
  • Ember Talon [Sara F.]-female Crane Hengeyokai Wu (shapeshifting Druid), actually a young gold dragon banished from the Celestial Court; NGl, Lvl. 8
  • Soske’ Tiatoshe [Geoff C.]-male Shengtese Tian Shukenja (eastern human Cleric), priest and animist from the Phoenix Clan, prophesied to do great things but plagued by family and ancestor spirits; LNg, Lvl. 8
  • Saigo Kasugi [Bruce K.]-male Bamboo Spirit Folk Samurai (eastern Sylvan Elf Cavalier) discreetly serving his daimyo; LNg, Lvl. 8
  • Tokoro Gawa [Drew S.]-male carp Hengeyokai Hulinyuan (amphibious shapeshifting Ranger) seeking to protect streams; with otter companion; CGn, Lvl. 8

“1 June 1227 B.C.E.:” After interrogating Hojo Etsuko, a River Spirit Folk who served the same master as Tokoro and who had agreed to a scheme to drive human peasants off their land, the diplomatic escorts let her go and hunted in vain for courier Desc Soo-Ann.

The would-be heroes then ventured into woods near Yao Shung and encountered a giant moth and hellgrammite (water larva), and Soske’ had a vision of an evil Druid.

Jung-Mo sends the horses back to the village, but Sonny thinks the group has lost the element of surprise against the Wu warping the woods. Toshi wants to push on, even as the day grows late.

Ember agrees with Sonny’s suggestion to use her shapeshifting ability as a surprise, and she recommends scaring or drawing out foes. Soske’ is certain that someone is aware of the destruction of the Jimenju (carnivorous tree bearing hypnotic head-like fruit) and Crimson Moth.

Saigo urges the group to approach the center of the gnarled grove from multiple directions. Despite his secret amphibious abilities, Tokoro is worried about getting caught in magical backwash and prefers to hang back as a sniper.

Ultimately, Sonny, Toshi, Soske’, and Ember follow the direct path from the south. They see eight monkey goblins hanging in the trees to either side. The chattering creatures draw small throwing knives.

Meanwhile, Jung-Mo, Saigo, and Tokoro creep along a creek from the northeast. They see a chained Oni (Ogre Mage) and three small humanoids with crow’s heads. The big brute and birdlike beasts dance around a circle of standing stones.

Wu Ember casts Thorny Entanglment, which causes a tree to grow spines that it hurls at one monkey goblin, wounding it. The needle-toothed monsters hit Ember and Toshi with sharp blades. Kensai Sonny draws his bow but misses.

Wu Jen Toshi kills three monkey goblins with Cone of Cold and directs his tiger Amaya to pounce on another. Shukenja Soske’ shoots a goblin out of a tree with a flaming arrow from his Ancestral Weapon.

The horned Oni notices Tokoro, draws its great sword, and charges. The Hulinyuan retreats and draws his long bow, as the three Tengu (Kenku/dire corbies) hide behind a standing stone. Ninja Jung-Mo hits the Ogre with his short sword, and Samurai Saigo repeatedly slashes it with his katana.

The surviving monkey goblins scatter but still attack. Ember misses with her kama (sickle), but Sonny catches two with a Whirlwind Attack with his kau sin ke. Toshi unleashes Tien Sha Pai (Red Cloud Kung Fu) in front of his friends for the first time, finishing off a foe wounded by Sonny.

Soske’ eventually slays another monkey goblin, and Sonny draws shurikens. As the three remaining flee, Toshi takes down two with Magic Missiles , and Amaya chases the last one.

Over by the megaliths, the angry Oni misses Tokoro and Saigo with its large sword. Tokoro rapidly fires his bow, including a thorn arrow, but misses, as does Jung-Mo. Saigo continues striking the Oni with his enchanted katana.

Sonny, Toshi, Ember, and Soske’ see a robed man with a staff walking from a hut northwest of the main clearing. As Ye-sing Kien approaches, he summons stone armor and Enlarges himself. Hengeyokai Ember casts Silence on Amaya to interfere with the evil Wu’s spellcasting.

Shengtese human Sonny runs toward the spellcaster and swings his chain at the dark Druid but misses. Shengtese human Soske’ fires arrows at Ye-sing but also misses. Shan Sao Toshi casts Protection From Evil and Animal Growth on Amaya.

The Oni hacks at Saigo and swings wildly at Jung-Mo. Hengeyokai Tokoro casts Abundant Ammunition to keep up with his rapid fire. Although Nannuattan Jung-Mo misses on his second sneak attack, he does eventually strike the Oni, drawing its attention from injured Saigo.

Druid Ember runs over to heal the injured Bamboo Spirit Folk, casting Cure Serious Wounds. Sonny takes a flying leap from one set of standing stones but lands in the sandy pit in the center.

To move out of Amaya’s Silence effect, Ye-sing Wild Shapes into an air elemental, breaks free from weapon master Sonny’s chains, and floats out of reach. He then summons Nindenzigo, a fiendish Decapus. The tentacled horror narrowly misses Ember but snaps at Sonny with its claws and bites Amaya.

Shan Sao Toshi hits his opponent with a Lightning Bolt, and Soske’ isn’t put out when the corrupt Druid raises a Wall of Stone to seal Sonny, Saigo, and Amaya in the circle with Nindenzigo.

Ember Wild Shapes into a large eagle and claws at Ye-sing. Sonny uses his iron sword-breaker to fight defensively against the Decapus, and Saigo shoots arrows.

Jung-Mo Levitates and chucks a Whippet (incendiary boomerang) at the Oni, but he is surprised when it flies after him! The Ogre Mage hits Ember, Saigo, and Tokoro with a Cone of Cold. Soske’ Channels Positive Energy to heal his friends.

Sonny runs up a wall but is unable to reach the vaporous Druid, who Calls Lightning Storm against the adventurers. The martial artist climbs out of the circle with Nindenzigo. Cleric Soske’ successfully dispels the Decapus with a Holy Word.

Wizard Toshi casts Arc Lightning at the Oni and Druid. Rogue Jung-Mo defensively uses Darkness to evade the Ogre and maneuvers for another sneak attack. Ranger Tokoro and knight Saigo shoot the Oni out of the sky, disappointing Toshi, who is prophesied to kill many of the monsters.

Cleric Soske’ fires an arrow at the enlarged air elemental. Eagle Ember fights in the air. Toshi casts Mass Snake’s Swiftness on his allies and hits Ye-sing with aSound Lance. A volley of arrows from Tokoro and company finally brings down the evil Druid.

Jung-Mo discovers that the three Tengu have returned to human form. They are Jik Zeng Meizhu, Zhan-Shi Shude, and Dao Xu Tan — the children kidnapped from Yao Shung! Toshi is relieved that they can’t be used for some unholy ritual.

Ember and Soske’ attend to the wounded, while Sonny, Saigo, and Tokoro search the Scarlet Order’s camp. They find the following items:

  • Dagger, + 2 — to sell?
  • The Dancing Wasp, + 1 kusarigama (weighted chain and sickle), can be used to summon a giant wasp — claimed by Sonny?
  • Great sword, + 3 — Sonny?
  • Periapt of Health — Ember
  • Potion of Levitate — Saigo
  • Potion of Protection From Chaos — Toshi, who can also enchant other items
  • Ring of Feather Fall — Soske’
  • Scroll of Mirror Image — Toshi
  • Studded leather armor, + 2 to Armor Class and Resolve/Will checks — Tokoro, who will trade in his existing + 2 set
  • Wand of Magic Vestment, + 1 to AC per 2 caster levels, 12 charges — Soske’
  • The Whispering Shrike: + 1 wakizashi (short sword), can be used to Shield other; hilt contains letter addressed to someone at Bazran Hai — Jung-Mo

The triumphant team prepares to head back to the village before continuing on its diplomatic mission north….

I look forward to seeing some of you at tonight’s “Vanished LandsVistel’s Expedition” session! In the meantime, remember to make sure that your Obsidian Portal records for the “New Dawn” party are up to date.

Also, let me know who of you will be around for Byron’s visit to the Boston area next Wednesday, Oct. 8.

“Vanished Lands: A New Dawn” Session 40.31 — Shamed Spirit Folk and enlarged vermin

Fellow role-players, here are my notes for “Vanished Lands” Session 40.31, which was held on Sunday, 21 September 2014:

Long ago in a distant land, spirits and men directly traded bamboo, silk, and steel. Wars to the west, twisted monsters, and power-hungry sorcerers threatened the eastern kingdoms, so the call went out for new heroes of honor and tact….

  • Souji Nobuto ‘Sonny’ Yoshimitsu [Beruk A.]-male Shengtese Tian Kensai (eastern human weapon master) from a dishonored house in the Lion Clan, specializing in chain weapons; with talking horse Yip; LNg, Lvl. 8
  • Toshiharu ‘Toshi’ Sembutsu [Byron V.O./absent]-male Shan Sao Wu Jen (eastern Halfling Wizard) from the Tiger Clan with a destiny; NGc, Lvl. 8
  • Ember Talon [Sara F.]-female Crane Hengeyokai Wu (shapeshifting Druid), actually a young gold dragon banished from the Celestial Court; NGl, Lvl. 8

“30 May to 1 June 1227 B.C.E.:” The wanderers investigated recent kidnappings, fought a Jinmenju (a tree with head-shaped fruit), and learned of a scheme to drive Shengtese peasants from their land and enslave them.

Jung-Mo makes sure that his wyvern hatchling is secure and checks on Lady Yun Aei-Yong, the Nannuattan (eastern Dark Elf) emissary of the Gokuri Empire. Toshi continues his arcane research into a proper cage for the young wyvern.

In nearby stables, Sonny and Saigo continue the interrogation of Hojo Etsuko, a River Spirit Folk (eastern Grey Elf) who serves the same master as newcomer Tokoro. She defiantly admits that courier Desc Soo-Ann had tempted her with an offer, supposedly from Gokuri, to drive the Shengtese (East Asian) human peasants from their farms.

Ember and Soske’ bring Tokoro, who expresses sympathy with Hojo’s staunch defense of the wilderness. Tokoro draws a kunai (small knife), but Ember tries to calm him. Saigo asks the woman if she had anything to do with the children missing from Yao Shung.

Hojo says that she knows nothing of the woods to the north of the village and is shamed when Saigo angrily points out that Desc Soo-Ann, or “Desan” for short, could be a child killer as well as a slaver and a spy.

Sonny and Saigo pull Tokoro out behind the barn, and the Hulinyuan vouches for Hojo. Tokoro explains that their river spirit master is a few days’ ride to the southeast across the Plains of Sathendo. The Kensai and Samurai ask if he would approve of Hojo’s shift in mission from negotiating with the farmers to attacking them.

Ember and Soske’ talk with Hojo, who promises to plead with her master on behalf of the village if the true threat is from the woods or Gokuri rather than ignorant peasants. Nannuattan Jung-Mo and Shengtese human Soske’ play cards and stay with the prisoner, while the others look for Desan.

Hengeyokai Ember shifts into crane form to search outside Yao Shung. Shengtese human Sonny and Bamboo Spirit Folk Saigo go to the “Red Reed” inn to search the messenger’s room. The sleepy innkeeper tells them that Desan checked out before dawn.

Ember spots Desan’s clothing hanging from a branch. The Wu Wild Shapes into a wolf and follows footprints northeast until they end in high grass. She concludes that Desan may have magically transformed into a flying form.

The diplomatic escorts regroup at the stables. Tokoro’s otter darts over to Hojo, who is still tied up. Curious Shukenja Soske’ briefly picks up the squirmy otter. Ember reports on Desan’s trail, and her companions agree that he poses a bigger threat to Yao Shung than Hojo, who has abandoned his horse.

Saigo releases the River Spirit Folk with a stern warning to report to her master and not to attack the villagers. Tokoro gives some supplies to his colleague. Hojo wishes him well with his new adventuring party.

The group rests for a day before heading back into the woods. Druid Ember scouts ahead in crane form [not “airwolf”]. Warriors Sonny and Saigo eagerly follow on horseback. Stealthy Jung-Mo guards spellcasters Soske’ and Toshi, and Ranger Tokoro brings up the rear.

Ensorceled woods near Yao Shung

The copse of gnarled tree grows dense with vines and underbrush, slowing the team’s progress. A giant moth hits Ember, and the rest of the group stumbles through the tangle to help her. Saigo takes time to aim his daikyu (long bow).

Soske’ calls upon quarrelsome spirits for an Ancestral Weapon, and Tokoro casts Abundant Ammunition. Sonny tells Yip, his talking steed, to advance, and he leaps onto a tree. The Crimson Moth buffets Ember with its wings and extends its proboscis to such her blood.

The injured crane misses with her talons and turns to lead the giant insect toward the party. Jung-Mo fires a volley of arrows but misses. Toshi explains to Tokoro that he and his friends have encountered many unnatural creatures in their travels.

Saigo and Jung-Mo hit with their next shots, but Soske’s flaming arrows miss the moth. Tokoro rapidly fires Tanglefoot arrows, slowing the monster. Sonny jumps onto it and hacks a wing with his axe, which is enchanted against giants.

The Crimson Moth is unable to shake Sonny from its back, and another sticky arrow from Tokoro drops it from the sky. Ember pecks at it with her beak, and Jung-Mo hits it with an arrow. Sonny notices sparks shooting from the dying creature’s razor-sharp wing tips, and he jumps off just before it explodes!

Ember is not so lucky, and Soske’ Channels Positive Energy to heal her and Sonny. The weapons master hacks off the moth’s wings so that priest Soske’ can sacrifice them to his ancestor spirits.

Wu Jen Toshi recommends looking for a nest or cocoons, and the wanderers find five. Wise Ember reminds them to check for the missing children, but each cocoon contains only a large larva, which are quickly dispatched. The travelers save the cocoons, because their silk can be turned into clothing as strong as steel armor.

Sometime later, the horsemen ride into a swampy area of the woods. As they back out, a giant crustacean springs from the water and fixes its pincers on Tokoro. He hacks away at it, but his blade bounces off the creature’s carapace.

Saigo draws his no dachi (great sword), and Sonny wraps a kusarigama (weighted chain) around the enlarged hellgrammite. Soske’ fires more flaming arrows, but Ember’s Hold Animal spell is unsuccessful. The jaws of the dobsonfly larva continue to constrict on Tokoro.

Armored Saigo sheathes his sword and helps nimble Sonny use his chain to pull the hellgrammite off of unlucky Tokoro. Ember slays it with Flame Strike, and Soske’ dismounts for closer investigation.

Soske’ uses Sense Elements (psychometry) on the water bug. The Shukenja has a vision of a human shaman in stone armor wandering the woods, warping the local flora and fauna. He is accompanied by crows, an Oni (Ogre Mage) in chains, and monkeys. Soske’ also sees something moving under a sandy pit and neatly folded children’s clothing.

Soske’ tells the party that the evil Druid and captive children are nearby. The would-be heroes leave their horses and ready for the next round of magical beasts as they approach the center of the grove….

Byron, we missed you, and Geoff, we’ll miss you next weekend! I’m glad that your team has gotten through various revelations and sticky situations, but more challenges are ahead! I’ll double-check each of your character records on Obsidian Portal to make sure they’re leveled up properly.

I also look forward to tonight’s start of Rich C.G.’s “Tunnel Vision” modern supernatural miniseries (using Hunterthe Reckoning).
